Places: 573 Club

September 3, 2010 2:04 PM

From above, Target Field looks something like a spinning baseball. The building projects constant motion, with jets of energy leaping from its corners into the surrounding space.

It might have been enough just to have these jets as superficial elements of the facade, but all have been finished off into dramatic, and highly functional, spaces. The Metropolitan Club and pro shop reach out with the canopy on the plaza side, while the Town Ball Tavern balcony extends the other end of the canopy toward Fifth Street and the trains.

In between, at the home plate corner of the ballpark, an equally dramatic jet honors perhaps the greatest Twin of all, and his Hall-of-Fame, home-run-filled career.

Harmon Killebrew's career home run total is appropriately carved into the signature limestone, to give the 573 Club its name. Carrying the theme throughout the room are large photographs of his classic swing.

This mural is behind the staircase. The window looks onto the promenade, and the door goes to a kitchen.

This looks from the base of the stairs, behind the big pillars, toward the street.

These images are found at the top of the staircase, which leads to the Suite Level.

Killebrew's autograph adorns a bar which evokes the gigantic piece of lumber that home run hitters bring to the plate. (An earlier idea to have the bar made entirely from an uncut piece of ash was scrapped when the cost estimate came in close to a million bucks.)

The purpose of the space during games is really just for lounging. But it is available for rental for special events on non-game days.

Daylight (pre-game)

Night (about the 7th inning)

Compare this picture, from the open house in March, with the one above and you'll see that some furniture reconfiguration has taken place.

Unlike Hrbek's (which is directly below this space), I have never seen the 573 Club teeming with people. It definitely has a "club" feel, but not a "bar" feel at all. And while there are monitors available to keep up on the game, they are sort of downplayed. This is a place to come when you need a little quiet time away from the game, perhaps to take or make a call.

Balconies extend the space over the sidewalks and out into the neighborhood.

Looking from the doorway to the south, across Seventh Street

Looking up Seventh Street to the west

At the end of the balcony you can see down the promenade.

Looking back toward downtown from the end of the balcony

The Hrbek gate is directly below. It's a lively place after a game.

Looking back toward the doorway into the club

And, like the other spaces in the Legends Club, memorabilia is on display.

Two additional spaces are directly adjacent to the 573 Club. This map of the Club Level should help in orienting your view.

As you exit the 573 Club back into the Legends Club hallway, you run right into the famous "quote wall" which is just outside the press box.

To the left of the quote wall, around a corner, is the security desk for the press box, one of the many places in the park where small gatherings of people can be seen preparing for the event just before the gates open.

Directly across from the quote wall, to the right as you exit the 573 Club, is a fairly large retail store.

The Legends Club retail store is just visible at the right of this picture.

Finally, you've probably seen this in plenty of images, but right at the turn in the hallway, where the three Legends Club areas meet at the press box, a gigantic Twins logo is embedded in the floor.

There's no mistaking who this place belongs to, or who among the legions of players which have worn the uniform has made significant impact on the character of the club.

I fully intended to squeeze seat width and sightline talk into this post, but it got a little long. I had a rare opportunity to do some actual measuring and was more than a little surprised by what I found. That will have to wait until next time.

When the tour resumes: Metropolitan Club, Town Ball Tavern, Hrbek's, Twins Pubs, and the Suite Level.

Maybe it should be the 574 Club, now that Thome surpassed Killebrew at Target Field.
Just kidding, Max.

Your previous post about last night's game was generous....that was some serious mismanagement of both the game and the roster, given the expansion on 9/1. It may cost us a few more wins, in a series where we basically are playing for the #2 seed. How did that happen after 9/1? It was a 13-inning game...not a 22 inning marathon.

So the Twins are wearing the throwbacks tonight. I thought that was a Saturday deal? Also, D-Span decided to change it up tonight and go with the short pants look instead of the pajamas look with the pants over the shoes. Did he just start that tonight or recently? He didn't have them that way tuesday night. Must be trying something new to break out of his recent slump.

With the season nearly over, I can't decide which was a bigger letdown about Target Field: all the snow outs or the horrible smell from the garbage incinerator. :)

Guessing the throwbacks are for the 50th anniversary commemoration this weekend.

Haven't seen any discussion on this...the Twins have taken the no number gate and added a huge smoking area outside the gates there. I'm not crazy about it, cause now I have to walk by about 50 smokers when we come in the doors. It is good to see though that they are trying some new things around the park.

Does anyone know where I could find details on the legend's game this weekend? It's Sunday before the game, right? Time? Who's playing? etc.

Jared,

Span also changed the at-bat music, or someone did and changed back after he got a hit...

Also, at the game on Thursday a panel on the "out of town scoreboard," "big screen" and the "hr porch view marquee" all went out at some point either before the game or during.

Saw a Twins IT staff in the elevator carrying a Daktronics box, and italked to him for about 15 seconds on our way down 1 level, and was only able to get a brief statement that he was indeed on his way to the "out of town scoreboard" and unfortunately I did not have a great chance to engage about the issues with the scoreboards, but it appears Thursday night was the night the pieces started to go out.

Got me thinking, how often do they/will they need to replace the various components of the screens?

Was at the game tonight, and I was pleasantly surprised (well not really surprised)to see everyone wearing long sleeves/hoodies/jackets in preparation for what was undeniably a chilly game. Doesn't matter that we're outside, we know how to dress for the weather!

Also, had the cheeseburger with fries from the hennepin grill, it was great for the price!

also also, saw 1 vendor selling frozen lemonade at the start of the game and never saw him again. My friends and I couldn't help but imagine that he went to a couple sections then went to his boss to tell him that he wasn't going to sell frozen lemonade on a night as cool as this!

I wish they wouuld wear the cream colored throwbacks more often, those jerseys are sweet. Also with they would quit wearing those blue softball jerseys so much!

Also have noticed over the last couple of nights more bulbs are burning out on the Minnie & Paul sign. When they shake hands, the arms goes out both up and down, so you have to guess he has an arm because you see parts of the hand. Surprising because those are the pieces that are lit least often. Maybe going on/off is hardest on the bulbs like that. Could see something change with that in the future.

I think I remember reading that all of the lighting on the Celebration sign is LED, designed to look like neon.

Posted on September 4, 2010 at 12:59 PM by Rick Secured User 14

The missing lighting on the celebration sign may concern something going wrong with the connecting wires rather than the lights themselves burning out.

On that note, during Thursday night's game, a portion of the main scoreboard to the lower left went black for a while. It seemed like some sort of computer error. They rebooted the board a few times and eventually restored it to full functioning.

Jared, I was at the game last night and as the Twins took the field I immediately noticed Span had the high socks look going. I wish more young players would try that look, especially with those wonderful 'throwback' jerseys.

I was in row 1 of section 236, looking straight down on Span as he made that first inning catch. Very cool!

Anyone know when the gates open for Sundays game? I know they have that Legend Game at 12:30, but not sure when gates will open.

Gate Times/Locations

Target Field gates open for admittance 1 - hours prior to the first pitch for Monday through Thursday games, and 2 hours prior to the first pitch for Friday through Sunday games.

So I got my two boxes from part 2 of the guaranteed giveaway and both Minnie and Paul bobbleheads were broken as was one of the Mini Target Field replicas.

Any other STH's who purchased the "guaranteed giveaway" receive any broken items??

Anyone know if the Twins STH/promotions department is doing anything about these broken bobbleheads and Mini Target Field replicas?

I am going to the game tomorrow and will talk to guest services about this. I am sure I am not the only person who received broken bobbleheads and/or mini Target Fields.

Hey Josh,

I had the same question about gate times. The game was originally scheduled for a 1:10 start, but now the twins website lists the game time as "first pitch at 2:10 after pre-game activities". I would guess that they are going to stick with opening the gates at 11:10, even though the Twin's game won't start for another 3 hours.

Mike,
Yes they had a lot of breakage with the booble heads. There is one person that is handling all of the replacements. I don't have his name or number any longer. He is taking names and addresses and is in the process of having replacements made and shipped to us. I was told that they would be here in September. I'm sure someone at guest services would be able to put you in contact with the right person.

Legends Club Scraps

September 2, 2010 4:08 PM

Here's a quick addendum to the recent look at the Legends Club.

I was a little unclear on what the food at the atrium chef stands really was. But I had a chance to get some detailed info the other night.

The Carew atrium features the one-pass buffet for $19.95. It's not exactly your typical ballpark food, but I bet it's good (if you're into that kind of thing).

Here's something you may not have noticed about the Legends Club: it's lopsided. OK, maybe "asymmetrical" is a nicer way to put it, but there's no doubt that there are seven full sections of seating on the third base side, and only four on the first base side (there are five and a half partial sections in between).

The wood-backed seats of the Legends Club are one of the first things you notice when visiting Target Field. They jump out against the green of everything else, and you might wonder, "How do I get there?"

Real Outdoor Baseball

The look at the Legends Club is going to wait a day because, despite today's final score, I got some fun pictures at the ballpark this afternoon.

The sky was high.

Our tickets were out in the Grandstand, or should I say "on the surface of the sun".

One thing that the design disguises nicely is that the Pro Shop (and other key components) are actually built over lanes of freeway. That can clearly be seen here.
